Polokwane City are the surprise leaders of South Africa’s Absa Premiership after five matches played across the country on Saturday.
Rise and Shine went into pole position in one of three afternoon games when goals from Nicholas Moutlong, Puleng Tlolane and Salulani Phiri took them to a 3-1 home win over 10-man SuperSport United.
The other afternoon games ended in draws, with both Stellenbosch and Chippa United awaiting their first wins of the season. Stellies, thanks to a brace from Waseem Isaacs, were close to beating Black Leopards but ended up having to settle for a share of the spoils after an injury-time equaliser from Karabo Tshepe to make it 2-2 at Athlone Stadium. At Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Chippa were held 0-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic.
Another winless team this season is Maritzburg United, who nearly claimed a creditable away draw against champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but conceded a last-gasp goal to Lyle Lakay to lose 2-1 in Tshwane. Earlier strikes from Gaston Sirino and Siyanda Xulu had left the game in the balance.
The final match of the day was a thriller at Moses Mabhida Stadium, as Bidvest Wits defeated Orlando Pirates 4-3. The Clever Boys, who claimed the victory thanks to goals from Deon Hotto, Mxolisi Machupu, Cole Alexander and Phatutshedzo Nange, move into second place on the log, while the Buccaneers remain in eighth place.
The Absa Premiership continues with two games on Sunday – Cape Town City v Golden Arrows and Baroka v Highlands Park – before the round wraps up on Tuesday with AmaZulu v Kaizer Chiefs.
